Catalinbread Proto Collection: Complete Set

The Catalinbread Proto Club is an ongoing, limited-run series of experimental guitar pedals created to release leftover code, niche passion projects, and unique prototype circuits that didn’t quite fit into standard production schedules.

This set is the complete offering, including the Proto Club Passport and Stickers. Includes the original packaging of each pedal as well as carrying case. A rare opportunity for Catalinbread fans to snatch up the whole lot. These pedals are used but in great shape, some very light wear can be spotted on some of the pedals. No Power supply is included.

• Tritone (Proto 227): A slapback pitch echo featuring a call-and-response octave-up and blendable perfect fifth.
• Filter Verb (Proto 462): A shoegaze-oriented resonant low-pass filter, chorus, and reverb chimera with a momentary extra-reverb footswitch.
• Pads (Proto 365): A smeared texture generator routing a long-decay reverb into a four-voice chorus and a square-wave tremolo.
• Mirror (Proto 4224): A specialized limited-run utility/ambient circuit
• Lo-Fi Delay (Proto 5): A triple-tap delay where each tap hits its own filter circuit and modulation.
• X/F (Proto 6): A parallel phaser and chorus that splits your instrument's frequency spectrum via an adjustable crossover control.

Tritone Proto 227 (Pitch Echo)

  Our inaugural foray into the Proto Club began as a B-side for our Soft Focus Deluxe. On that pedal, we had room for six programs, and a handful of them were just a bit too outside the scope of that device. This one, the Tritone, was universally loved by the crew but the vibes clashed with the palette of the Soft Focus Deluxe a little too hard. It’s been on some of our own pedalboards for some time. Unfortunately, it’s stayed there away from public eyes and ears, but fortunately, it fits the exact vibe of the Proto Club!

   Proto Club was established for this exact reason; we have tons of effects on our breadboards and programming suites that we can’t squeeze into the release schedule, things that don’t quite fit into our lineup, circuits with too niche of an audience, or “our versions” of beloved classics, direct to you stripped of frill. This lets us get a little more creative for all you effects freaks out there. Y’all are our people!

   You wanted experimental? You got it! The Tritone features a call-and-response type octave-up that rides sidesaddle with a blendable perfect fifth. When coupled with an on-board slapback echo, this gives you the ability to seamlessly craft bursts of three-note arpeggios that can stand alone as a killer lead augmentation or can align with your rhythm parts to fill in the gaps with some interesting texture. Synth players? Please. The Tritone absolutely loves electronic instruments and takes them with ease. You can keep the action close to your chest with the addition of a wet-dry blend of the overall signal as well as one for the tritone. You can adjust the timing of the arpeggio as well as the echo feedback for some chaotic oscillation in certain settings.

Filter Verb (Proto 462)

   The second entry into Proto Club is a doozy, a prototype that’s been years in the making that a handful of us have been using for almost as long. While the Soft Focus came together just a short time ago, the Filter Verb was built around an effort to extract shoegaze tones from the more performance-oriented platform of one of our older discontinued devices. The result is a reverb-chorus-resonant filter chimera complete with expression control and momentary functions. A fat resonant low-pass filter makes precise cuts to the base of a lush modulated chorus-verb. You can use the knob to set the frequency of that low-pass filter, or plug in your expression pedal and control the cutoff that way. A momentary switch activates the room reverb at will, letting you insert precise, enormous reverb blasts at will, and you can set the heat of the onboard preamp before it smashes into all of that.

The Filter Verbs unfortunately collided with the Soft Focus during the development of that pedal, again collided with the Soft Focus Deluxe and has lain dormant since. We now offer its humble, mind-bending sounds as tribute to the Proto Club.

Pads (Proto 365)

   Our next Proto Club release is the first based on ~vibes~. A couple years ago, we were listening to Tame Impala’s “One More Year” and we were struck by a particular effect used on the vocals, a pads-sounding effect if you will. Taking inspiration from that led us down a whole rabbit hole of different textures, granular rearrangement of those textures, and how the processing order affects harmonic content. The result is something that came to be known around here as “Pads”, and we’re excited to be able to get this one out into the open.

   If we were forced to ascribe a singular effect type to Pads, it would be “smeared reverb,” but there’s much more going on than just that. A long-decay reverb effect enters a four-voice chorus, with each voice tuned to soften a different harmonic element of a guitar. Once the signal leaves the chorus, it enters a square-wave tremolo that’s also been tuned with a smearing effect. There’s a knob that controls the duty cycle (also known as “on time”) for rhythmic blips that sit right in the mix without being jarring. At its highest setting, this adjustable duty gives an intense stutter effect that carries your tone through the void.

Mirror (Proto 4224)

   The fourth Proto Club offering is something we're calling "[the] Mirror," based more on an idea than a concrete sound. Some time ago, we were working on the idea of a "swelling echo," and when testing it out, we integrated it into a pedalboard that had a modulated filter right after it. After clicking them on together, the juices started flowing but got tabled after some circumstantial twists and turns. A relatively clean swelling echo runs in parallel to an extremely powerful modulated low-pass filter that rips through everything in its path.

Lo-Fi Delay (Proto 5)

   Years ago, before one of our engineers worked here, he developed the framework of a truly killer lo-fi delay that we passed around the facility and loaned to musician friends until a couple of the knobs fell off. When it finally came back after a recording session, it didn’t work and nobody could figure out why. Years later, it’s still broken but the code was found on an old hard drive. We adapted the old code to fit our platform and it is now here for your enjoyment!

   The Lo-Fi Delay Proto Club release is a triple-tap delay, with each tap running into its own carefully tuned filter circuit, sent into a subtle modulation circuit then summed on the output. Most of the controls are self-explanatory for the delay fiend crowd, but the Lo-fi knob  simultaneously increases the cutoff frequency of each filter and increases the amount of modulation for a truly unique delay experience that gets even better when you stack it with other effects. An internal volume trimmer saturates the preamp and lets the character jump out of the mix a bit. Try it at the end of the line  (yes, after reverbs) for your new favorite delay sounds.

X/F (Proto 6)

   Our new X/F was actually born in the analog realm after experimentations into crossovers became increasingly complicated and exceeded our normal PCB real estate. After moving the project back into the digital realm, we celebrated our expanded capabilities by integrating some interesting algorithms into the fold. The result is a modulation effect that is unique in the world of these types of effects: two separate frequency-dependent modulation types: chorus to the high frequencies and phaser to the lows. You can choose the frequency where phaser ends and chorus begins, and both are mixed out of phase with one another for a lush parallel mod experience."
