Product description
In the shop we have a Fretless Mountain Banjo made by Jim Huron in 2004.
John Huron was an Indianapolis Born Civil War Reenactor that lived in Bristol, TN where he taught and made historical instruments at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina for 20 years. He has banjos in several museums: Birthplace of Country Music in Bristol TN/VA, Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Smithsonian Institution. Unfortunately John passed in March of 2026, leaving on a legacy of hand built historical instruments.
His craftsmanship can be seen in this piece, serialized: MB-108. The mountain banjo is made entirely of Cherry with an aluminum inner ring and natural groundhog hide head. The original wooden tuner pegs are included but have been upgraded to geared tuners for more tuning stability with steel strings (a small screw hole can be seen under one of the tuners, pictured). Can also be played with gut strings for historical accuracy. Strap buttons have also been installed for easy playing while standing. There is a small gap between the outer wood ring and the top by the strap button that does not appear to be moving.
As noted on the inside label, the banjo is a 25.5" scale. Includes a stickered chip board case.
