Product description
In the shop we have a 1957 Gibson Southern Jumbo with original Gibson alligator case and an original pack of strings. A beautiful example of the Gibson quality of this era, this Southern Jumbo spent most of the last 25 years living in a closet in it's case after the original owner's passing. Fortunately even though unable to play the instrument, the inheritors took good care of their grandfather's guitar. The original red color is still present and vibrant in the finish with no fading. A good amount of checking is present throughout the finish as to be expected and a bit of genuine play wear at the sound hole, adding the perfect amount of vintage mojo.
The guitar is free of cracks in the body besides one small crack (now repaired) that runs from the sound hole to the edge of the body against the fingerboard. The bridge like most of these had started to pull away from the body. Our in-house luthier was able to reglue the bridge into place, and touch up the small area in front of the bridge where some lacquer had chipped away. A couple ends of two small finger braces on the top have also been reattached. The tuning machine buttons have been replaced due to the originals off gassing and crumbling away. The machines themselves are the originals. The original frets are also still installed and are not needing to be worked or replaced for some time yet.
Sitka Spruce top with straight X bracing and sunburst finish; mahogany back and sides, multi-ply body bindings. Bound rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays; pearl headstock logo and crown.
The neck joint of this guitar is in beautiful shape and shows that no prior work on the neck joint has been performed. The action currently measures to a Martin Factory spec of 1/8" on the bass side, and 3/32" on the treble side at the 12th fret. The first position or "cowboy" chord position is VERY comfortable and suited well for most styles. This guitar would play nicely in the hands of a bluegrass flat picker. A neck reset is currently not an absolute need for this guitar, but would be of benefit for a modern acoustic guitar player.
The original interior label is missing, but the factory order number (FON) places this guitar's production year at 1957 in the Kalamazoo, MI factory. It is currently strung with D'addario EJ16 strings and has the original saddle piece. A beautiful clear sounding guitar, this SJ is ready to find it's new home and family.
The guitar will ship in it's original case with all accompanying parts and accessories.
